Family Categories
Immigration NZ has temporarily closed this category and at this stage, there is no indication when it will reopenA number of Quota categories apply for residence in New Zealand and these reflect the importance of family support, especially for recent migrants; and New Zealand's international responsibilities to neighbouring South Pacific countries. They are:
- Family Quota
The criteria for this category require that:
- The applicant has one or more immediate family members (parent, brother/sister or child) living permanently and legally in New Zealand for 184 days in each of the 3 years immediately prior to the date of your application, who are prepared to provide sponsorship.
- Your sponsor must be able to provide full financial and accommodation support for you (and your family), for your first two years in New Zealand.
- The applicant does not qualify under any other residence category.
- The New Zealand based relative must register the applicant for a place in the quota in New Zealand.
- Other requirements depend on your relationship to the family in New Zealand.
NOTE: Quota applications may be lodged in April of each year.

- Samoan Quota
Basic criteria for this category require that the applicant:
- The applicant is a citizen of Samoa aged between 18 and 45 years
- The applicant has an offer of employment of at least $25,000 per year
- The applicant must meet English language, health and character requirements
NOTE: Quota applications may be lodged in July of each year.

- Pacific Access Category
Pacific Access Category This category grants residence to limited numbers of applicants who are citizens of:
Tonga Tuvalu Kiribati Fiji
Basic criteria for this category require that the applicant:
- The applicant is a citizen of one of these countries and is aged between 18 and 45 years
- The applicant has an offer of employment of at least $25,000 per year
- The applicant must meet English language, health and character requirements
NOTE: Pacific Access Categories applications are usually accepted in July of each year.

- Partnership Policy
You must have immediate family living legally in New Zealand 3 years immediately prior to the date of your application. Welfare payments are generally not payable to new immigrants.
